Argentine passport: benefits, validity and where it is accepted

The Argentine passport is the international travel document issued to Argentine citizens. It can be valuable for people who plan to build a long-term life in Argentina, keep other citizenships and have a practical document for international travel.

It is not, however, a shortcut to citizenship and it does not make every destination visa-free. Entry rules depend on the destination, the purpose of travel, the length of stay and the passport shown to the airline and border authorities.

How long is an Argentine passport valid

Under the current rules, an ordinary Argentine passport is valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors. The period starts on the date of issue. In some cases, the validity of a minor's passport or the passport of a person with restricted legal capacity can be limited by the responsible authority.

That is the document's validity period, not the length of a visa-free stay abroad. Some countries require several months of passport validity after entry, so check the destination's current rule before buying a ticket.

Where the Argentine passport makes entry easier

For short tourist and business visits, Argentine citizens can generally enter the Schengen Area without a prior visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This does not automatically cover work, study or relocation, and entry requirements may include an electronic travel authorisation once one becomes operational.

For a short visit to the United Kingdom, Argentines generally do not need a visitor visa in advance, but they do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). It is linked to the specific passport and does not guarantee admission. For the United States, Argentine citizens generally need a visitor visa unless they travel with another qualifying passport or have a separate basis for visa-free entry.

Within MERCOSUR and associated countries, Argentine citizens can use a valid DNI instead of a passport for many trips. The passport remains a full international travel document, but the exact requirement should be checked with the destination and the carrier.

  • Schengen Area — short stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period, subject to entry conditions
  • United Kingdom — short visits with an ETA; this route does not authorise work
  • United States — a visitor visa is generally required unless another passport or exception applies
  • MERCOSUR and associated countries — a DNI may be enough for many trips, depending on the route
  • Other destinations — visa-free entry, visa on arrival or an electronic authorisation are set by each country

The main benefits

The central benefit is that Argentine citizenship can coexist with other citizenships where the relevant countries allow it. The passport lets a citizen return to Argentina as an Argentine, access consular protection abroad and travel under the rules that apply to Argentine nationals.

For someone who is genuinely building a life in Argentina, it is also a more stable status than temporary residence: it does not need to be renewed like a residence permit. The passport does not replace every local document, though. For registration, banking or proof of address, you may still need a DNI and supporting documents.

What the passport does not give you

Visa-free tourist entry is not permission to live, work or study without authorisation. Even in a visa-free destination, border officers may ask for a return ticket, funds, accommodation, insurance and a clear purpose of travel.

The passport also does not create an automatic right to live in the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States or any other country. Long stays, work and study use separate immigration routes. Treat the passport as a travel document and proof of citizenship, not as a substitute for a visa or residence permit.

Can you keep another citizenship

Argentina allows multiple citizenship and does not automatically require people to give up existing passports when they become Argentine citizens. The other country may have its own rules, however: it may restrict dual citizenship, require entry on its passport or impose specific duties.

If you hold two passports, check the rules of both countries in advance. At the border, travellers generally use the passport that gives them the right to enter that country, while airlines need to see the document that proves boarding eligibility. After naturalisation, separate rules can apply when an Argentine citizen enters or leaves Argentina.

How to get an Argentine passport

You must first have Argentine citizenship. For a foreign national, that may come through ancestry, an option available to a child of an Argentine parent or naturalisation under the current requirements. Moving to Argentina, holding temporary residence or having a DNI does not by itself mean that you already qualify for an Argentine passport.

Once citizenship is established, the passport is issued through RENAPER in Argentina or through an Argentine consulate abroad when that service is available for your place of residence. A valid DNI and additional documents are normally required. Before booking, check the current requirements, fee and delivery method: ordinary, expedited and consular procedures can differ.

  • Confirm that you have Argentine citizenship
  • Check that your DNI is valid and your personal details match
  • Choose RENAPER or the consulate responsible for your residence
  • Prepare the documents and payment required under the current rules
  • Before travelling, check passport validity and the destination's entry rules

The bottom line

The Argentine passport is most relevant for people who plan to make Argentina their long-term home and want flexibility for international travel. Its strengths include a 10-year adult validity period, regional mobility and convenient access to a number of tourist destinations.

Its value should not be measured only by the number of visa-free countries. Before every trip, check the official rules: whether a visa or ETA is required, how long you may stay, how much passport validity is needed and whether work is permitted. Immigration rules change, so a current check is more reliable than an old visa-free list.
