Healthcare in Argentina: what to plan before you move

Healthcare is worth sorting out before you book the flight. Even if you are healthy, the first months call for separate coverage; ongoing treatment needs a clear handoff plan for doctors and medication in a new country.

How healthcare is organized

Argentina has a public system and private healthcare. For newcomers, private plans and coverage for the transition period are often the practical focus: they make it easier to find a doctor, clinic and familiar style of care.

The network and price depend on the city, age and health profile. Compare more than the monthly fee: check doctors, booking rules, medication coverage and whether service is available in a language you are comfortable using.

If you need routine or ongoing treatment

Prepare a medical summary before leaving: diagnoses, surgeries, recent test results, medication list and your current doctor's contact details. Keep it in English or Spanish if possible, with a separate digital copy.

Do not assume a medication will have the same name or be sold without a prescription. Check the local name, availability and dispensing rules in advance, and agree on a travel supply with your doctor.

  • List every current medication, dosage and active ingredient
  • Ask your doctor to outline the monitoring plan and follow-up timing
  • Check that the new plan covers the specialists and tests you need

The first weeks after arrival

Keep your coverage details, medical summary and emergency contacts easy to reach. Do not wait until medication is running out or a problem becomes urgent to look for a regular doctor.

For a family, check pediatric, dental and vaccination records separately. Insurance terms and healthcare rules change, so confirm them with official sources and the provider you choose before traveling.
